Job Description
1.0 FTE Educational Assistant
10-Month Position
Cedarland PS (Brantford, ON)
Grand Erie District School Board represents more than 28,000 students in 58 elementary schools and 14 secondary schools within the City of Brantford and the counties of Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk, as well as students from Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. The Educational Assistant works under the direction of the classroom teacher and under the supervision of the Principal. Placement may be in a variety of settings including regular and/or self-contained classrooms. The Principal reserves the right to re-allocate educational assistant positions within the school at any time based on student needs.
Responsibilities:
Lifting, toileting, feeding, possible catheterization
Preparation of learning materials
Riders’ aide duties
As part of a team, provide input and implement Individual Education Plans and Behaviour & Safety Plans
Supporting students, where appropriate, to develop independence through release of responsibility from adult support
Directly assisting students who require support with behaviour and/or self-regulation, or other identified needs (ie academic, socio-emotional and/or cultural)
Tracking of student behaviour as directed by the Behaviour Counsellor
Participation in student swimming programs
May be required to wear personal protective equipment
overtime and use of a personal vehicle may be required
may be required to be available for a call-back outside of regular working hours for emergency situations
Qualifications:
Community college diploma in a related discipline (ie educational assistant, developmental service worker or child and youth worker)
Experience working students in an educational setting and/or with special needs preferred
Current certification in Behaviour Management Systems (BMS) preferred
First Aid certification preferred
Autism Intervenor course or experience working with children with Autism preferred
Demonstrated ability to build rapport with students, to work collaboratively with staff and students, and to implement student programs as directed by the teacher
Demonstrated knowledge of the factors that influence student achievement and/or behaviour, and appropriate strategies to prevent, manage and de-escalate student behaviour
Demonstrated ability to implement Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) strategies
Understanding of program accommodations and modifications to meet the diverse needs of students with learning and behavioural challenges
Familiarity of the Life Skills Planner and task analysis preferred
Awareness and adherence to confidentiality and privacy matters
